Sans Period

A pro bono campaign that provides menstrual education to those in need

Sans Period Campaign

THE CAMPAIGN

In July 2023, legislation commonly known as the "Don't Say Period" bill began limiting public school education about human sexuality, gender, and, ultimately, periods, before high school. In partnership with the non-profit PERIOD., Sans Period is a secret typeface that turns period punctuation into period education. It allowed us to sneak period education into schools and circumvent the school systems' internet firewalls.

Sans Period Typeface

Each and every letter hides at least one blood drop in plain sight. We also hid 36 unique menstruation facts in the periods themselves, one for every letter and number.

Sans Period Implementation

To get the typeface out to kids without alerting the policymakers or public-school administrators, our targeting needed to be as smart and sneaky as the typeface itself. So, we quietly launched the campaign in October 2023 with digital billboards that ran from 7am to 8am while kids are en-route to school. TikTok and Instagram were also instrumental in letting kids know how to get the typeface, install it, and use it to their advantage.

MY ROLE

In our exploratory phase, I conducted co-creation sessions with young girls to learn more and understand how menstruation is taught in schools. As the lead writer, I wrote the 36 facts around menstruation that required them to be short and accurate to fit within each period. I also lead the development of the Instagram and TikTok content.
